Dear Sir / Madam
I am writing to apply for the Mobile Product Operation Specialist position advertised in the Sina Weibo. My name is Dong Haoxuan, and I am currently a sophomore student studying in National University of Singapore (NUS), major in Computer Engineering.
QiongYou is a marvelous website designed and targeted for the benefit of the backpackers. Since I was a Junior College (JC) student, it is been my dream to become a backpacker who travels around the world to experience the beauty that the nature provide us. After my graduation from JC, I did not hesitate to embark on a journey of my own. I have been to 24 provinces in China, 48 different cities, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Inspired by the post and guide of peer backpackers on QiongYou, I have found new and amazing ways to appreciate the wonderful nature in which the Earth has embraced us. With the great passion and first-hand experience, I believe that I would be the perfect person to work with to make QiongYou even a better place for the backpacker.
Besides the passion for travelling, as a Computer Engineering student, it is my specialty to deal with software and data. Through my courses in NUS, I have learnt and developed skills that would be perfect to be a mobile product operation specialist. I have been working in a team to develop software of my own which helps people to manage their tasks and schedule. On top of that, I have also been learning mobile application programming language such as Objective-C. Furthermore, during my first year of study, I have taken a psychology module that allows me to work in teams to discover the behavior pattern of different people. This helps me to understand better when people make choices under different circumstances. All the above are the skills that I could bring to the team in the future if I would be given the opportunity to work as a mobile product operation specialist.
The learning journey in NUS not only provides the knowledge I eager to acquire, but also teaches me the importance of positive attitude and teamwork. With great obstacles faced during studying and backpacking through different terrain and weather, I have nothing but stronger and more willing to take on new challenges. The immersion with different cultures and the experience on working with great teams also equip me with the weapon I fight for future problems. Therefore, I believe I would be the perfect candidate for the position and hope you would think the same.
You can contact me anytime via email at aticni@hotmail.com or my cell phone, (+65) 93235023. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you about this internship opportunity.
Yours sincerely
Dong Haoxuan

Resolving Interpersonal Conflict

As a student in NUS, I foresee that in the near future, I will face a situation where I need to purchase a private car for transportation.

Most probably, I will approach a car dealer after I decide which car to buy. However, the interest of the car dealer will be definitely different from mine. My interest is to buy the car at a price as low as possible. If possible, I will also ask for free gifts as many as possible or a loan with interest as low as possible. However, the car dealer’s interest is to sell the car at a price as high as possible in order to get a higher commission fee. But his primary interest is to sell the car in order to get the basic commission fee. Thus, there will be a conflict of interest between each party.

I foresee that it would be hard time throughout the negotiation process. I will keep on criticizing on the crucial flaws of the car interested in order to ask for lower price from the car dealer. At the same time, the car dealer will provide explanations to the “flaws” I have pointed to reject my request to lower down the price. In return, the car dealer may offer certain free gifts within his authority to maintain the selling price at a relatively high level.

In this case, I think the most important step to carry on this negotiation is to find out the common interest between both parties. For example, one of the common interests is to get the deal done. Thus, I can increase my bottom line price a bit higher. In compensation, I will ask for more free gifts or modifications to the car. Thus, this conflict may be solved and the deal will also be done.

Question: Is there any other common interest between the car dealer and me?

WHY EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT TO ME

As a university student, communication with different group of people is one of the essential parts of campus life.  Therefore, effective communication skills are much needed to make me more comprehensive to others as well as to understand others more precisely.  Since communication involves two parties, I will explain why effective communication skills are important to me in two different perspectives --- message sender and receiver.

First, as a message sender in a conversation, it is important to make your point clear to others.  If the message you are trying to send is ambiguous or hard to interpret, it is very difficult for others to understand.  As an engineering student, we usually work in teams.  Therefore it is important to make your points clear so that you can convey the message to the team to achieve the same goal.  Being a foreign student who uses English as a second language, I tend to misuse certain words as they have different meanings in different context.  With better communication skills, it helps me to focus on the correct ideas I want the others to understand.

Secondly, as a message receiver, you need to capture the essence of the dialogue and the underlined meaning of the speaker.  With further study in effective communication skills, I would be able to focus on the main point of the speech as well as to seize the non-verbal or para-verbal part of the conversation so that I can understand more precisely what the speaker wants to convey.

In summary, effective communication skills are a set of asset that one would really need to acquire when he or she goes off to the society.  Therefore, it is very important for me to learn better effective communication skills.
